[ How We Met | How He Proposed | Our Wedding Day ] So you wanna hear the detailed story of how we first met? Well, it's a great little diddy that ALWAYS makes me smile everytime I think of it, no matter HOW sad or stressed I may be. I hope you enjoy it, too. It was mid August 2001. My friend Jennifer and I were out dancing one Friday evening at a local dance club in North Dallas called Times Square. Was a typical night of dancing. After dancing to a particularly good song, a tall striking blonde woman came walking up to me. "Excuse me, are you here alone?" She asked and it seemed like an odd question. "Yes..." I said, a little cautiously. "Well, my name is Anita and I have a friend that wants to meet you. I'd like to introduce you to him." I looked at her a little concerned, remembering a similar instance that had happened earlier in the night where I was led to a very heavy set man about twice my age who didn't speak English very well. I sighed and raised my eyebrows, "Well, is he at least CUTE?!" I said a little snobbily. The woman raised here eyebrows back and me and answered slightly haughtily, matching my tone, "Uh, Yea." So I followed her back to a group of three guys. She introduced me to all three: Casey, Bubba and David. I wasn't entirely sure which one she was trying to set me up with. Bubba said, "Well, lets dance" and we all followed him to the dance floor. While dancing, it was evident that it was David that was the one I was supposed to meet. We made some small talk while dancing. At one point, Casey turned to David and mentioned he was gonna go and have a cigarette, then left the dance floor. I looked at David. "So, do you smoke?" I asked. "Yeah." He answered. I was unable to hide the disappointment in my eyes. I frowned. 'Shoot', I thought. 'Just figures.' "Oh, I see. Well, I don't smoke." I was about to thank him for the dance and find Jennifer. "No, wait... what did you ask me?" David said, realizing I lost interest. "I said... do you smoke?" "OHHH!" He laughed nervously. "I thought you said: 'Could you GET ME a smoke'. Cuz of course I could get you a smoke. But no, I don't smoke." I smiled in relief, not realizing it was just THAT second David decided he would quit smoking and be a non-smoker. A few minutes later we headed over to the bar. David asked me if I wanted a drink, and I asked for water. He asked me why I was drinking water and I explained to him briefly about my health program and how I didn't drink often, only one night of the week. We quizzed each other back and forth about the normal stuff. I learned he didn't work out, but was very active. He talked a bit about his house in Plano, his pool, his boat, his parties and his cookouts. He came off a little pompous and sounded like a player. I wasn't incredibly interested because of this. Last thing I needed was a party guy who just wanted to mess around, especially one who was 7 and a half years older than myself. Jennifer walked up to me and asked if I was ready to go. I was. I told David it was nice meeting him, and that we were heading out. "No, wait. Can I get your number?" He asked. "How bout you give me your number and I'll give you a call?" I said, but knew in the back of my mind I probably wouldn't. David motioned to the bartender and got a pen and wrote his name and number on the back of a matchbook and handed it to me. "Ok, now I need yours." He handed me the pen and a napkin. I looked at him, trying to decide what to do. It seemed clear he would be insistant for my number. I decided to take the pen. The thought ran through my mind to write down a fake number, but for some reason, to my surprise, I found myself writing down my real number. I handed it to him. "Thanks. I'll give you a call. Would love for you to come out on the boat with us one of these weekends. We go every weekend." "OK." I said and waved goodbye. Little did I know I was waving goodbye to my future husband and the to-be love of my life. And that is the story of how we first met. |
